Squaw Valley Ironman

The interview

During an interview that I heard on KCRW’s “Press play with Madeleine Brand,” Andy Wirth, CEO of Squaw Valley Ski Resort, spoke about the issues regarding drought in North Tahoe.

Andy spoke about the resilient ridge being a factor preventing snow from coming into the mountains. Although this ridge has impacted his two ski resorts, the damage was only a 20% decrease in business. Madeleine asked whether he would be able to survive more years such as the previous. Mr. Wirth stated emphatically that he could.

His capitol structure was solid and he is taking advantage of snow making mechanisms. Out of the 6000 acres, 4000 was skiable.

Madeline asked him about El Niño and Andy felt that it would not be a problem due to the science of snow making. Mr. Wirth has other options at his two resorts including holding wedding venues and other functions to invite more guests.

A visionary

Andy Wirth is the CEO of Squaw Valley and also runs Alpine Meadows ski resorts. Friends talk about Andy as a talented, authentic and friendly person. His vision to unite the two resorts by gondola have given skiing enthusiasts a real treat.

In the past skiers had to travel by car to get to the other mountain but soon they will be able to travel between mountains via the gondola. Skiers and snowboarders have only dreamed this to be true but it is now turning into a reality thanks to Andy’s vision and foresight.

Troy Caldwell owns the land between the two resorts and he and Mr. Wirth have reached an agreement regarding the merging of the mountains. Plans for the merger will be submitted to the U.S. Forest service and Placer County this summer.

Aside from running his ski resorts Andy Wirth also has raised money for charity. He has raised $14,460 for the Warefare Warriers for the Navy Seal Foundation. This charity is close to his heart as a sky diving accident in October 2013 ripped off his right arm. It was surgically reattached by doctors.

Born in Neubrucke, Germany Andy attended the University of Edinburgh. He obtained his Bachelor degree from Colorado State University. Wirth holds positions as board member on over 10 community organizations.

On March 8, 2013 Wirth was featured on Undercover Boss at his Squaw Valley and Alpine Resorts.
